Hardie Pacific is an Asia-Pacific strategic resources group focused on Tier-one critical minerals and gold, advancing resource projects that support modern technology, advanced manufacturing and critical global supply chains.
Duncan Hardie, Founder and Director of Hardie Pacific, began his career in New Zealand, securing his first gold permit in 1973, followed by a coal permit in 1974, maintaining continuous involvement in the resources sector from that time.
Alongside these early mineral interests, the Hardie family developed a strong commercial foundation across property investment and real estate, building capability across land-based operations and long-term asset development, including the refurbishment of Hardie House in Sydney’s central business district (pictured here).
In the mid-1980s, Duncan initiated a transition to Australia, establishing the group’s first Australian companies in 1986, including Hardie Oceanic and Hardie Pacific Pty Ltd, followed by relocation of his family to Sydney in 1987. This marked the beginning of a broader phase of growth across industrial land and property.
From this base, Goodman Hardie Limited emerged, listing on the ASX in 1995 and later grew into a global industrial property business. Duncan exited Goodman Hardie in 2005 and later that year made his first mineral investments in Australia. Also, in 2005, the group established Biodiversity Land Pty Ltd, the first dedicated biodiversity land company in New South Wales, reflecting an early recognition of the role of sustainability in land and resource development. Between 2010 and 2015, Hardie Pacific expanded into the resources sector, building on its operational foundation to move into mineral exploration and production.
Today, while Hardie Pacific continues to build momentum across its magnesium, copper, aggregate and sand projects, our main focus is in monazite (feedstock for rare earths), and gold. Our portfolio has shifted from exploration to unlocking the value of our drilled and proven mineral resources through strategic investment, partnerships and project development.

1969 marks the beginning of Duncan Hardie’s commercial journey when he purchased his first investment property. In 1973, he secured his first gold and coal permits in New Zealand. He later expanded into land and residential property development, building early expertise across multiple sectors. In 1980, he acquired his first industrial building in Greymouth.
In 1980, Duncan began exiting residential property investments, concentrating on building his industrial property portfolio. By the mid-1980s, he began looking at opportunities in the Sydney industrial market and, in 1986, established his first Australian companies, Hardie Oceanic and Hardie Pacific exchange contracts on the first three industrial buildings. In early 1987, the Hardie family relocated to Sydney, and Duncan focused solely on creating the commercial foundation that would later support the group's entry into large-scale industrial acquisitions.
In 1987, the New Zealand-based Goodman family invested in the Hardie Pacific portfolio, and Goodman Hardie Pty Ltd became the group's primary investment vehicle. The business rapidly expanded to become one of the three major industrial property players in Sydney. In 2000, Goodman Hardie (now Goodman Group) was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange.
Goodman Hardie Limited continued expanding, initially throughout Sydney and later into Newcastle, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide. In 1999, it successfully acquired control of the Capcount Property Trust, doubling its market capitalisation. In 2005, Goodman Hardie merged with one of its main competitors, Macquarie Industrial, to form Macquarie Goodman Limited, creating the largest industrial property company listed on the ASX at the time. Following completion of the merger, Duncan chose to leave public markets and returned to operating his private companies.
Duncan shifted his focus towards mineral exploration and mining, purchasing from a multinatonal a large property portfolio with underlying remnant coal deposits in Hunter Valley, NSW. During this period, he studied the evolving European Union biodiversity framework to support his property and mineral interests in Australia and contributed expertise to the NSW Government on biodiversity legislation. This period also marked the creation of Biodiversity Land Pty Ltd, one of New South Wales' earliest dedicated biodiversity land companies, reflecting the group's long-term commitment to land stewardship, environmental compliance and responsible development.
Apollo Gas Limited listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, and Duncan exited shortly after the listing as Apollo was subsequently acquired by a larger consortium. The group then gradually began exiting its remaining hydrocarbon interests and focused increasingly on critical mineral exploration, initially targeting copper before expanding into monazite and other critical minerals.
The group expanded beyond property into mineral exploration across the Asia-Pacific, commencing greenfield exploration and identifying critical mineral opportunities that today form the foundation of the current portfolio.
Hardie Pacific completed its transition from greenfield exploration to a portfolio of defined mineral resources and clear pathways to commercialisation. Today, the group is focused on unlocking value through strategic investment and partnerships, particularily in monazite and gold.
